Sunbury psychology service

Our Sunbury psychology service is designed for people who want local, practical support without travelling across Melbourne. Appointments are available at the Sunbury clinic by appointment only. We support adults, adolescents, children and families depending on the concern, referral details and appointment type.

People commonly contact us for help with anxiety, low mood, stress, emotional regulation, adjustment, school concerns, attention, learning, behaviour and assessment questions. Psychology is not one-size-fits-all, so the first step is understanding what is happening and what kind of support would be useful.

Individual psychology appointments

Individual psychology sessions give you a structured space to talk through what has been happening and work on strategies that fit your life. Sessions may include education, goal setting, cognitive behaviour therapy strategies, emotional regulation skills, behaviour planning, parent guidance or practical tools for work, study and relationships.

You can book privately without a referral. If you have a GP Mental Health Care Plan, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for individual psychology sessions. Your GP determines whether a plan is appropriate.

ADHD, ASD and cognitive assessments

Our psychology team also provides structured assessment pathways. These are different from standard therapy appointments because they usually involve intake, questionnaires, clinical interview, standardised testing where appropriate, scoring, interpretation and a written report.

  • ADHD assessments: for attention, impulsivity, executive function and everyday impacts at school, work or home.
  • ASD assessments: for autism-related questions, including social communication, sensory patterns, routines, developmental history and functional impact.
  • Cognitive assessments: for learning, memory, attention, processing speed, executive function and support planning.

Assessment pathways usually begin with an intake appointment. This helps the psychologist understand the reason for assessment, explain the process and decide whether a full assessment is likely to answer the question being asked.

Psychologists at Sunbury

Mariam Ahmar works across psychology and neurodevelopmental assessment pathways, including ADHD and ASD assessments. Reta Khawajeh is Sunbury-based and leads cognitive assessments. You can read more about the team on our practitioner page.

If your priority is seeing a psychologist in Sunbury soon, tell reception whether you are booking for therapy, ADHD assessment, ASD assessment or cognitive assessment. That makes a real difference because assessment pathways have different time requirements and preparation.

Fees, Medicare, NDIS and private health

Funding depends on the appointment type and your circumstances. Private psychology appointments can be booked directly. Medicare rebates may apply when you have a current GP Mental Health Care Plan. NDIS may apply when your plan includes appropriate psychology funding. Private health rebates vary by fund and level of cover.

For public information about Medicare mental health care plans, see Healthdirect Australia's mental health treatment plan guidance. For current appointment fees and assessment costs, call reception before booking.
