Post Surgery Management

Physiotherapy treatment at 101 Physio & Allied Health

Post-surgical physiotherapy is rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery. We work with patients after knee, hip and shoulder surgery, spinal procedures, foot and ankle surgery, and a range of other operations — following the surgeon's protocol and adjusting progression to the individual. To book, call (03) 9746 6852 or book online.

Surgeries we commonly rehabilitate

  • Knee — ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, knee replacement, arthroscopy
  • Hip — hip replacement, arthroscopy, FAI surgery
  • Shoulder — rotator cuff repair, labral repair, shoulder stabilisation, shoulder replacement
  • Spine — microdiscectomy, decompression, fusion (with surgeon's approval)
  • Foot and ankle — ankle reconstruction, achilles repair, bunion surgery
  • Wrist and hand — fracture fixation, tendon repair
  • Other orthopaedic procedures as appropriate

What your first appointment may involve

  1. Review of your surgical paperwork — operation report, surgeon's protocol, current restrictions.
  2. History — pre-surgery function, current status, goals.
  3. Physical assessment — within your post-surgical restrictions.
  4. Plan — proposed sessions over the rehabilitation period, with progression milestones aligned to the surgeon's protocol.
  5. Initial treatment — gentle range, exercise prescription, advice on swelling and pain.
  6. Coordination — with your surgeon's clinic, especially for protocol clarifications.

Treatment may include

  • Progressive range-of-movement work
  • Strengthening and conditioning
  • Hydrotherapy in selected cases (e.g. early post-knee or hip replacement)
  • Manual therapy where appropriate
  • Functional retraining — walking, stairs, transfers, return to sport
  • Coordination with the surgical team

Frequently asked questions

When should I start physio after surgery?

It depends on the surgery and the surgeon's protocol. Some procedures benefit from rehabilitation starting within a few days; others have a longer initial rest period.

Will you talk to my surgeon?

Yes — with your consent, we routinely communicate with surgical teams to confirm protocols and progress.

Do I need hydrotherapy as well as land-based rehab?

Sometimes — hydrotherapy is useful in the early phase of certain rehabilitations (e.g. knee or hip replacement) when land-based loading is uncomfortable. It's discussed at assessment.
