Physiotherapy treatment at 101 Physio & Allied Health

If you've been injured in a motor vehicle accident in Victoria and have an accepted claim with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), our physiotherapists can manage the clinical side of your recovery at Melton, Hoppers Crossing and Sunbury. We work with patients across a range of MVA-related injuries — whiplash, back and neck pain, soft-tissue injuries, post-surgical recovery, head and concussion follow-up, and longer-running rehabilitation. We coordinate with your case manager and GP and provide the reporting the TAC requires. To book a TAC physiotherapy appointment, call (03) 9746 6852 or book online.

What is TAC physiotherapy?

TAC physiotherapy is physiotherapy treatment for an injury caused by, or arising from, a transport accident — funded under the Victorian TAC scheme once your claim has been accepted. The clinical work is the same physiotherapy we provide privately: assessment, individualised treatment, exercise rehabilitation, education and progress review. What's different is the funding pathway and the reporting to the TAC.

For accepted claims, the TAC funds reasonable treatment that is clinically related to the transport-accident injury. We invoice the TAC directly so there's usually no out-of-pocket cost during accepted treatment, although limits, approvals or excess arrangements may apply depending on your claim and policy.

Who may benefit from TAC physiotherapy?

You may be a good fit for our TAC physiotherapy if:

  • You have an accepted TAC claim from a motor vehicle accident in Victoria — driver, passenger, pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist
  • The injury is musculoskeletal in nature — whiplash, back and neck pain, shoulder, hip, knee, foot or ankle injuries, post-surgical recovery
  • You're returning to work, sport or daily activities after an accident and need rehabilitation that respects your current capacity
  • You have ongoing post-concussion symptoms where vestibular or cervical-spine physiotherapy may help (our Melton clinic offers vestibular rehabilitation)
  • You're managing chronic post-accident pain and your treating doctor agrees physiotherapy is part of the plan

If you're not sure whether your claim is accepted or what's covered, call us or talk to your TAC case manager — we can talk through what we need before your first appointment.

What your TAC physiotherapy appointment may involve

A first TAC physiotherapy appointment is usually 30 to 45 minutes:

  1. Claim & paperwork. We confirm your TAC claim number and the injury described. Bring any documents from your case manager or GP.
  2. History. The accident — what happened, when, how the injuries developed, what's been done so far (ambulance, ED, imaging, surgery, other treatment).
  3. Physical assessment. Movement, strength, neurological screening where relevant, specific tests for the suspected injuries.
  4. Goal discussion. What you're trying to get back to — work, driving, sport, parenting, recovery milestones.
  5. Plan. What we think is going on, options, proposed session frequency, and how progress will be measured.
  6. Treatment where clinically appropriate. Manual therapy, exercise prescription, dry needling where suitable; sometimes the first session is assessment-focused.
  7. Reporting and communication. With your consent, we communicate with your TAC case manager, GP, and any specialists involved. We provide the reports the TAC requires.

Common MVA injuries we see

  • Whiplash and whiplash-associated disorders — neck pain, headache, restricted movement
  • Lower back pain from impact, restraint or post-accident movement
  • Shoulder injuries from seatbelt restraint or impact
  • Soft-tissue injuries across multiple regions
  • Concussion follow-up where physiotherapy supports vestibular or cervicogenic symptoms
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation after MVA-related orthopaedic surgery (knee, hip, shoulder, lumbar)
  • Chest wall and rib pain after airbag deployment or impact
  • Knee and ankle injuries from pedestrian or cyclist impact
  • Hand, wrist and forearm injuries
  • Chronic pain and deconditioning following extended recovery

Treatment is tailored to your assessment, the injuries documented in your claim, and the recovery timeline your treating doctor has agreed to.

Funding eligibility depends on your circumstances, claim acceptance, approvals and the scope of accepted treatment. Please contact reception if you're unsure where your claim sits.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral for TAC physiotherapy?

You'll need your TAC claim accepted and an indication from your treating doctor that physiotherapy is appropriate. The TAC processes vary — bring any GP correspondence and claim paperwork to your first appointment, and we'll work out what's needed.

How do I know if my TAC claim has been accepted?

Your case manager will write to you confirming acceptance and outlining the cover. If unsure, ring your case manager (their contact is on any correspondence) or call us — we can sometimes help you check.

Do I pay anything at the appointment?

Usually no — we invoice the TAC directly for accepted treatment. Some claims have an excess arrangement or session limits; we'll always discuss costs with you before any out-of-pocket session.

What about whiplash specifically?

Whiplash is one of the most common MVA injuries we see. We assess the neck and related areas, identify any "red flag" features that need medical review, and develop a plan that may involve exercise, manual therapy, education and graded return to activity. Recovery timelines vary considerably — your physiotherapist will discuss what's realistic for your presentation.

I have ongoing symptoms after a concussion — can you help?

For post-concussion vestibular or cervicogenic symptoms (dizziness, balance issues, headache linked to neck movement), physiotherapy may help where the diagnosis is appropriate. Lara at our Melton clinic has clinical experience in vestibular rehabilitation. A medical clearance from your GP or a concussion-management specialist is usually appropriate before vestibular work begins.

How many sessions will I have under TAC?

It depends on your injuries, response to treatment and TAC approvals. Some claims have set session limits; others are reviewed at intervals. We work to clinical timeframes that align with your treating doctor's plan.

Can I switch from another TAC physiotherapist to you?

Yes — you have the right to choose your provider. Notify your case manager of the change. Bring across any prior reports if you have them.

What if my claim is in dispute or pending?

You can still receive treatment, but funding may not be available until the claim is resolved. Some patients pay privately and seek reimbursement once accepted. Talk to your case manager and call us.
