Headaches – Migraines — physiotherapy across Melbourne's outer west

Physiotherapy treatment at 101 Physio & Allied Health

Not every headache responds to physiotherapy, but a subset of headaches — particularly those involving the neck (cervicogenic headache), tension-type headaches, and some migraine presentations with a neck component — can be helped by physiotherapy assessment and treatment. We see headache patients at our three clinics; vestibular and neck-focused care is also available at our Melton clinic with Lara. To book, call (03) 9746 6852 or book online.

Headaches we may be able to help with

  • Cervicogenic headache — headache arising from the upper neck
  • Tension-type headache
  • Some migraine presentations where neck involvement is part of the picture
  • Post-concussion headache where vestibular or cervical-spine input is appropriate (after appropriate medical clearance)
  • Headache linked to jaw (TMJ) dysfunction in some patients
  • Headache that gets worse with sustained postures (e.g. desk work)

For other types of headache — particularly those involving sudden severe onset, neurological features (vision changes, weakness), fever, or marked change in pattern — medical review is the right first step, not physiotherapy.

What your first appointment may involve

  1. History — where the headache is, when it started, frequency, triggers, what helps.
  2. Examination — neck movement and strength, specific tests for cervicogenic headache, screening of related areas including jaw and thoracic spine.
  3. Discussion — whether physiotherapy is likely to help, and what other input might be appropriate.
  4. Plan — sessions, expected timeline, things to try at home.
  5. Initial treatment — manual therapy, exercise, education on triggers and posture.

Treatment may include

  • Manual therapy of the upper cervical spine where appropriate
  • Specific strengthening for the deep neck flexors
  • Posture and ergonomic adjustments for desk-based work
  • Education on identifying triggers and self-management strategies
  • Coordination with your GP, neurologist or headache specialist where helpful

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my headache is one physio can help with?

We assess at the first appointment. If your headache doesn't fit the pattern of headaches physiotherapy can help, we say so and suggest the right next step (typically your GP).

Should I see my GP first?

If your headache is sudden, severe, new, or accompanied by neurological symptoms, see your GP or attend an emergency department. For long-standing neck-related or tension-type headache, you can book physiotherapy directly.

Can physio help my migraines?

Sometimes — particularly where neck involvement is part of the migraine picture. We don't claim to "cure" migraine. We assess what physiotherapy may offer in your specific situation.
