Falls Prevention Physiotherapy in Melton, Hoppers Crossing & Sunbury

Falls prevention physiotherapy at 101 Physio & Allied Health

Falls and near-falls are a common concern for older adults, people with neurological conditions, and those recovering from surgery or extended illness. Our physiotherapists work with adults across our three clinics on the assessment and management of falls risk — combining strength work, balance training, gait assessment and home-environment input where relevant. To book, call (03) 9746 6852 or book online.

For general public information, see healthdirect Australia's falls prevention information.

Who may benefit

  • Older adults who have fallen, had a near-fall, or feel unsteady walking
  • People recovering from hip or knee surgery who are rebuilding confidence on their feet
  • People with neurological conditions affecting balance (stroke, Parkinson's, MS, vestibular disorders)
  • People after extended illness, hospitalisation or deconditioning
  • Family members concerned about an older relative's balance
  • People with osteoporosis whose fracture risk is heightened by falls

What an appointment may involve

  1. History — falls history (number, circumstances, injuries), current activity, medical history including medications that affect balance.
  2. Balance and strength assessment — standardised tests where appropriate (e.g. Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go, sit-to-stand).
  3. Gait observation — including use of walking aids if applicable.
  4. Discussion — what's contributing to falls risk in your specific situation.
  5. Plan — specific strength and balance exercises, environmental advice, and coordination with your GP or geriatrician if relevant.

Treatment may include

  • Progressive lower-limb strengthening (sit-to-stand, step-ups, leg work)
  • Balance training across difficulty levels
  • Gait retraining and walking-aid review
  • Home-program design — exercises you do between sessions
  • Education on home-environment safety (lighting, rugs, footwear, stairs)
  • Coordination with GP for medication review where polypharmacy is contributing
  • Hydrotherapy where land-based balance work isn't yet safe

Frequently asked questions

Is falls prevention only for older adults?

No — anyone with reduced balance, recent falls, or balance-affecting conditions can benefit. Older adults are the most common group, but stroke survivors, people with MS, and people recovering from surgery also see us.

Do I need a referral?

Not for private physiotherapy. A referral is required for some funded pathways (Medicare EPC, WorkCover, TAC, DVA).

How long is the program?

Variable — typically 6–12 weeks of progressive work, with home-program continuation. We agree timeframes at the first appointment.
